Perimenopause and Menopause: Entering a New Phase of Life

Menopause and perimenopause are often misunderstood as something to fear or dread, but many women thrive during this time in their lives. They find that menopause brings more freedom as they no longer have to deal with menstrual periods or be concerned about getting pregnant. Some even say they feel more empowered and wiser during this transition.

Menopause officially starts when you have not had a period for 12 months. Perimenopause is the period of time between when you first start to notice changes and hit that 12 month mark. It most commonly happens when your ovaries start producing fewer hormones in your 40’s. A time when your children may be growing into adulthood and your life may be opening up.

There are symptoms associated with perimenopause that can be uncomfortable. Different women experience them at different levels. Things like:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Sleep issues

  • Vaginal dryness
